Nineteen and Having Twins

By Terri Hamilton

I found out that I was pregnant when I was 18. I was scared and delighted at the same time. My mom was there when I took the pregnancy test, and I think she was happier than me.

I was four months pregnant when I found out that I was having twins. I was scared to death. I thought it was funny because not two weeks before, I was joking with a girl at my doctor's office because she was having twins.

I had a really rough pregnancy. It always seemed that I was hurting. My whole body seemed to hurt all the time.

The day I had them, I was just about to be 32 weeks pregnant. I woke up hurting on my left side, and my back was hurting, but they didn't feel like contractions, even though I had never had contractions. I called my mom, as my husband was at work, and she told me to call my doctor.

I called and my doctor had just left to go to a medical convention in Virginia. The secretary told me she would call me back. I waited and waited and finally she called me back and told me the doctor that was covering for my doctor wanted to see me.

I got dressed and called my mom. She sent my friend Amy to come and get me to take me to the doctor. I thought that I had a urinary tract infection or something, so I wasn't going to worry my husband at work. My mom had foot surgery the day before, so she couldn't drive.

I got to the doctor's office, and they hooked me up to the fetal monitor after making me pee in one of those little cups. He came in and saw that I wasn't having contractions, but said he wanted to check me. He checked me and his eyes got really big. He said, I have no idea how you did it without knowing it, but you are dilated to 5 centimeters already. There was talk about sending me to another hospital, but then there turned out to not be enough time.

My husband got there and they scheduled an emergency Cesarean Section and by 2:30 p.m. I was in the operating room. Jordan Edward Hamilton was born at 2:55 p.m., and weighed 3 pounds, 15 ounces. One minute later, Jonathon Richard surprised us (he was supposed to be a girl) at 2:56 p.m. He weighed 4 pounds, 1 ounce. They were the most beautiful babies in the world. They were rushed to Arkansas Children's Hospital where they stayed two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. I was so glad to get them home and cuddle them to no end.

Being a mother of twins is tough. Thank God for my mom who helps out more than she should. I just had a baby girl, who caused me some real pain in the delivery room. The babies were born on March 10, 1999.

They are a blessing.
