Twins What a Joy!
By Kristi Moore
When I was 2 months pregnant I found out that I was having twins. I was so shocked that I actually passed out on the ultrasound table right there. That was the biggest shock of my life.
Things were a little bad for a while, because the father decided that it was just too much for him and he left. But after a while things calmed down, and the pregnancy went well for a while. When I was about 3 months pregnant I got a stomach virus and lost about 15 pounds in one week. It was horrible, but I made it through OK.
Things went smoothly until about 28 weeks. I went in for a routine ultrasound. They found me to be 2 centimeters dilated and partly effaced.
They put me in the hospital for observation and gave me a shot of steroids for the babies' lungs just in case I was to deliver. I was in for about four days and then was released on complete bed rest. That was terrible. I couldn't stand being laid up with nothing to do.
At 33 weeks I started having contractions. My mother took me to the doctor. I was 5 centimeters dilated and mostly effaced. They put me on magnesium sulfate to stop the contractions and gave me a second shot of steroids for the babies' lungs. That was on Thursday.
By Friday evening I was getting fluid in my lungs due to the magnesium sulfate. And I had a blood clot. So I was removed from the medication and immediately started feeling better. My OB said that it was OK to go ahead and let nature take its course. I would be allowed to have the babies when I went into labor.
Saturday night they gave me a sleeping pill because I was in so much pain and couldn't sleep. Sunday morning I woke up with a room full of doctors. A nurse told me I had been having mild contractions all night. They checked me, and I was 8 centimeters. They quickly gave me an epidural.
My doctor did an ultrasound. They determined that I needed a Cesarean section because Baby B was transverse, bottom down.
I was wheeled into an OR and gave birth to my son at 9:26 a.m. and 15 seconds. My daughter was born at 9:26 and 45 seconds. That's cool.
The babies did great. They needed no oxygen support. And they were only in the NICU for three days and in the hospital for a total of eight days.
They did better than I did. I got a massive infection from my C-section and had to have a blood transfusion to get better.
Now they are almost 1 year old, and they are a joy to be around. Thanks to all that helped me with this.
