Car Birth, 30-minute Labor and Delivery
By Natalie Cloughessy
Hi. My name is Natalie, and I'm from Rockingham in western Australia. This is the story of my third birth.
I was 11 days overdue and very ready to have my baby girl (number three). It all started at 9:45 p.m. My waters broke, and I went straight into labor. My contractions were coming five minutes apart, so I thought I had plenty of time.
The hospital I was going to was about 35 minutes away, so we decided to leave straight away. We got our other two kids in the car and packed a few things and off we went. I had only been in labor for about 15 minutes when the contractions started coming one minute apart. I started to become very nervous, so we rang my mother on the mobile phone and told her to meet us at the hospital rather than us dropping the other kids at her house, which was the original plan. Then all the fun began.
I told my husband that I could feel the head coming down. He didn't believe me until the next contraction came and out came the head. So my husband pulled over on the side of the road and delivered the baby into my arms. We rang an ambulance, and they came and cut the cord and sent us on our way to the hospital.
The labor started at 9.45 p.m. and ended at 10.15 p.m. – a whole 30 minutes! What an experience. She weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces. Rachelle is now 2 years old, and I'm pregnant with number four (girl). This time around, we are being induced at the hospital (thank god).
