My Horrible Birth-in-car Story

I am 24 years old and engaged to my baby's dad, Will. We'd been going out for long enough when I found out I was expecting. I was already 10 weeks on the way! Will was superb and really excited about being a dad for the first time.

Being pregnant had its ups and downs but overall I didn't mind it. I got great Gap Maternity Wear and people were so grateful to me when I was out and about. (But I guess having Will around really made them double take.)

My due date was August 25, 2002, and on August 8 I went to my midwife to get a final checkup. My baby boy was doing fine. Quite busy, whereas I was winding down! But I admit I was getting irritable about the whole thing.

When August 15 came, I started to feel the first twinges of labor. I obeyed my midwife Ally and gave her a call to tell her the good news. She said to make my way to the hospital soon to prepare for the birth. Boy! Was I overjoyed.

After six hours, the contractions were getting unbearable and consistent, but guess where I was – in traffic on the highway to the hospital! There was a multiple-car accident holding up the whole highway. I was yelling and drew so much attention. But I didn't care (at that time).

The minutes slowly went by and Will and I were really getting worried. It was a total jam and all we could do was call the ambulance and hope for the best.

So he did and all through the call, I'm pretty sure the operator heard me in the background. Then the worst possible thing happened, I couldn't resist pushing though Will was begging me to wait.

He helped me pull down my skirt as I screamed in pain. I was crying – my vagina was searing. I later found out that was because I pushed at only 7.5 centimeters dilated.

I was pushing in vain for four hours and the traffic was just now letting up. By that time, there was blood and mucous all on the seat as I changed positions to kneel down. It was absolute chaos.

Will pulled the car to the hard shoulder while he helped me out. I could barely move. The baby's head was crowning. Will could only get ready to deliver it.

Just then the ambulance arrived! A paramedic saw my state and called for a stretcher. I gave birth 12 minutes later in the ambulance while Will was mesmerized by the whole thing. I gave birth and the paramedics revived my baby boy, whom I named Oliver Yuri, and later brought us to the hospital to do a double take and stitch me up.

I got strong oxygen on the way to the hospital, but I was still yelping in pain. Then a doctor told me I needed 10 stitches – I ruptured my membrane.

After that journey, I was cleaned up and so was Oliver who was later showed to me. He was absolutely handsome. Flawless skin. I couldn't help being in awe. He was a healthy 8 pounds and had a slight heart problem from the trauma, but was later alright.

Understandably, I'm not sure I'll ever give birth naturally again. I'd prefer the calming of an induction or planned Cesarean section. And since my trauma, there has been a side road on that busy highway to prevent other similar problems.

God helped me and Oliver and I wish all readers the best wishes forever!
