My Ruptured Uterus

I have three children. My first was born at 28 weeks (2 pounds, 6 ounces) by Cesarean section due to developing full-blown eclampsia. I had severe high blood pressure, swelling, my kidneys shut down, I was fitting and lost my eyesight for three weeks. My baby was in SCUBU (NICU) for three months. He is 8 now and fit and healthy.

My second child was born at 37 weeks. Labor was brought on when I had pre-eclampsia. It did not go full blown this time. I had a vaginal delivery but had bad bleeding and had a transfusion of 4 units. It was a girl, 7pounds. She is 6 now.

My third baby was a ruptured uterus at 40 weeks. I had been monitored closely due to being high-risk. By 36 weeks I felt like I couldn't go on. I had a huge bump, and I am only 4 feet, 11 inches tall. I felt like I would pop, but doctors kept scanning me and saying all was well.

They started me off with Pitocin. Within an hour after I was jumping around, could not sit down, could not even manage to sit in a bath. It was obvious something was wrong.

They put me on the monitor, and the baby's heart rate wasn't showing. The doctor broke my waters. Then blood started gushing. The next thing I knew they were running down a corridor with me on a trolley.

I crashed three times on the operating table and lost six pints of blood through internal bleeding. My uterus tore right around. My baby was in my abdomen and swallowed my adult dose of diamorphine.

He was stillborn when they got him out. Then they got him going. His fist Apgar score was 1. But his second one was 9. He was 8 pounds.

He did well after being in SCUBU two days. I spent that time in intensive care and woke up wrapped in foil stuff for shock. They saved my uterus. I will never forget that day as long as I live
