Her dad passed away from leukemia on November 27, 1997. He never had a chance to see Cora, but I do believe that he watches down on both of us everyday and protects us from all danger. She even calls him her daddy in heaven.
Like I said, she was born December 6, 1997 at 6:57 p.m. I had gone into labor at 4:30 a.m. and was planning on a homebirth. I had done a lot of reading up on the subject and my mum (an OB/GYN) was coming up to be present for the delivery. I knew all about moving around to allow the baby to come down easier, as well as nipple and vaginal stimulation.
I remained at 5 centimeters for what seemed like forever. My mum then brought me into the backyard where I walked around for what seemed like forever (probably wasn't more than 45 minutes). I was never in any true pain, just incredible pressure. Mum continued checking me and slowly I started to progress.
Finally, around 9 centimeters, the pain was starting to get a little bit unbearable. I got into the birth tub and my sister-in-law and best friend started splashing the warm water over my stomach and my back. Finally, mum said I could push. That felt amazing. Almost like I urinated after having to go for a very long time. Just a relief.
Cora was 6 pounds, 1 ounce at birth.
I was very careful during my pregnancy (due to Kris being ill). I was very careful with what I ate and continued dancing as much as I could (I'm a ballerina). I believe that for me (not necessarily for everyone) that reading up on labor and delivery and preparing myself and my body for any pain, helped me to get through it naturally. I would do it again in a second.
This story is in memory of Kristian Alexander Malia, father of Cora
Elizabeth Malia-O'Reilly.
