I was going for my checkup at my OB/GYN in a town over an hour away from where I lived. I was 5 weeks from my due date. It was just a regular checkup. I hadn't even had an internal exam at this point, or a group B strep test.
I had been experiencing a dribble of fluid here and there for a few weeks, but thinking it was my bladder, I was not eager to tell anyone of this. My husband knew, and he was the one who actually told the doctor, but not until we were on our way out the office door. He had me come back in and although he told me that it was likely just urine, he would test it for amniotic fluid. He went ahead and I was shocked to learn that it was fluid, and I was horrified to realize that I had let this go on for weeks.
I was induced that morning while my husband made the trip back to our house to get some supplies for me and the baby. He arrived before I was really kicking into labor, and 24 hours later Rain was born. She was kept on antibiotics for a few days, and I had to receive antibiotics while in labor. She was a shocking 7 pounds and 21 1/2 inches.
I think we all have this horrifying image of our water breaking at the grocery store, but no one really tells us that you might only notice a few drips here and there when changing position. We were really lucky that she didn't develop an infection during that time.
When I had my next daughter I went full term, but also learned at 36 weeks that I was positive for group B strep. Whether I was with my first pregnancy I will never know, but I feel incredibly lucky that we have not had any serious consequences!
