My Premature Twins

My husband and I had just moved into our new apartment with our 3-year-old son when I found that my period was three days late. This concerned me because ever since Justin was born my period had come every 28 days exactly. I confirmed that I was pregnant with a home pregnancy test. I had none of the symptoms as with my first child so I was shocked.

At 5 weeks I went to the OB for a checkup and he performed an ultrasound . As he scanned he said, "Congratulations." I was confused that he said this to me since he had already told me that I was pregnant. He then turned the screen to me and I saw two little black marbles and I knew it was twins.

I left the office in a daze and the next couple of months went by without a hitch besides some morning sickness. I did not gain any weight with this pregnancy until my 5th month as with my first child.

At 24 weeks my OB referred me to a perinatologist and my OB visits became more frequent (every week). I was scanned every two weeks and was advised that Twin A was a girl and Twin B was a boy. They were extremely active and I was starving all the time.

At 33 weeks my perinatologist sent me to the hospital because I was having some high blood pressure (147/90, 160/100...). I got to triage and they placed me on the monitors . They immediately started picking up contractions.

I was admitted because the terbutaline did not stop the contractions and the Magnesium could not lower my blood pressure. They gave me steroids for my babies' lungs and I stayed over night.

On Saturday, May 5, I woke up to stronger contractions, so they gave me Stadol . By the late afternoon they had subsided so I allowed my hubby to go watch the Oscar De La Hoya fight at his boss'’house (50 miles away). My blood pressure still climbed so my OB came in and said, "I want to deliver you."

I was so scared. I called hubby and told him to turn around. As soon as he got there we started. The spinal block did not hurt but when I lay down I freaked out. I could not feel my chest expanding when I breathed. It was the worst feeling in the world. I was crying, begging to be put under, when my hubby came in. He told me that I was fine and that they had already started my operation.

Four minutes later out came Ashlynn Jean at 3 pounds, 15 ounces and one minute after her came Corey Vincent at 3 pounds, 14 ounces. They both required no oxygen; however they both had issues feeding.

My blood pressure stayed high until six days postpartum. I was released on May 12, Ashlynn was discharged on May 17 and Corey on May 18. My pain was minimal and my babies are perfect. I'm a little sad I tied my tubes, but both my pregnancies were high risk so I felt that it was for the best.
