Our Story: Emerson and Cate with Three

My husband and I had just celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary. In the following days I hadn't felt myself. My skin color had also changed; I was very pale. I went to my doctor right away and learned I was pregnant. At 18 weeks we learned I was pregnant with triplets. I have a fraternal twin, Elle, and though we were very close, our childhood had been a competition in every way imaginable. Throughout my pregnancy I wondered how would it be with three?

The weeks passed and I couldn't have been any bigger! My stomach was expanding by the minute. On an afternoon during my 32nd week, I felt strong pains in my lower abdomen; I knew that day was it. Luckily, my mom was staying with us in preparation for the babies. Emerson works in New York City and I was afraid if I were to go into labor, I'd be alone.

I frantically called my husband. He rushed to the hospital while doctors were preparing me for a Cesarean section. On May 16, at 4:48 p.m., Baby A, a boy we named Avery Ireland, was born at 4 pounds, 8 ounces. Baby B, a girl we named Isla Maeve, was born at 4 pounds, 6 ounces. Baby C, a girl named Violet Claire, was born at 4 pounds, 1 ounce.

Two weeks after Avery's birth, he went home with us. Violet remained in the NICU for a month and came home in mid June. It was quite the transition from one child to two. Isla, who also remained in the NICU, was tiny, but strong. After her 35-day stay she came home and completed our family.

Today, Avery, Isla and Violet are strong and healthy 3-year-olds. They are walking and talking and love visiting their dad in the city. Emerson and I are considering having one more child, but now the three are just right.
