Twins Born at 31 Weeks, One Vaginal, One C-Section

After 4 very long years of trying to conceive and on our third and last attempt at IVF (in-vitro fertilization) we found out that we were pregnant. We were both in shock and so very happy and excited. Then, a few weeks later, we found out that we were going to have twins...we couldn't have been happier! The pregnancy was a difficult one (we went through several months of bleeding and worrying and hoping and praying that our precious little angels would be OK).

Then, at 31 weeks, I was admitted to the hospital with what all the doctors and nurses stated was a bad case of the flu. This caused me to have some contractions but the doctors got them under control. I was lucky enough to have a doctor that had the foresight to give me the medication to help develop our babies lungs... just in case they were born prematurely.

I was in the hospital for 4 days and all the while complaining about very bad back aches -- to which the nurses replied, Of course your back aches you have eight limbs inside you. I went to the bathroom around 11:15 p.m. and thought that my water might have broke. I called the nurse who kind of laughed and said she would check but most likely it hadn't. She checked and said that it was leaking but it hadn't broke and all would be OK.

I got up to go to the bathroom again at about 12:00 (nothing unusual since those days I seemed to live in the bathroom). This time I felt what I thought was a babies head? (I had never had a baby before, but I also never felt anything quite like this before.) I used the emergency button in the bathroom to call the nurse. I was too scared to move at all! She came and I told her what I thought and she chuckled and told me it probably wasn't the baby's head. When she checked she screamed, Oh my god, it is the baby's head! and started calling everyone in to my room. They rushed me to delivery and within two pushes our son Daniel was born.

When the doctor said, It's a boy! I was in shock because the whole pregnancy everyone told us that we were having two little girls. I heard Daniel cry which eased my mind a little. Then about a minute later the doctors announced that the second baby was in distress and needed to be taken by C-section. Emily was born 11 minutes after her big brother. They weighed 3 pounds, 6 ounces and 3 pounds, 3 ounces. They were very tiny but perfectly healthy! My husband made it to the hospital in time to go to the NICU with our babies.

When I woke up in recovery, my husband and my best friend were there and I knew that our little angels were OK. They are now 10 months old and keeping us hopping...but we love and cherish every moment of it! When they are older they will get a kick out of the story of how at their birth they fooled all the doctors and came into this world under their own terms!
