Adam's Story: 31 Weeks
My husband and I were thrilled to hear that we were expecting our first child in 1999. We couldn't wait and thought we had everything planned perfectly. The nursery was ready, the bottles were bought, the baby shower was set, the name was picked out and we were waiting for May 9 to get there so we could see him!

I was teaching my first class on a Friday in March. We were making chili for our chili cook-off our school was having. I remember that I kept going to the bathroom and in the back of my mind I knew something was wrong. I had a very heavy discharge and I was scared. I remember going into the teacher's lounge and calling the labor and delivery nurse. She told me that it probably wasn't anything – but I needed to come in and get it checked out. I was planning to go in then – but all of the sudden it stopped. I finished out my Friday at work. My husband and I went out to dinner with friends and I noticed it again. We went straight to the hospital. The rest is pretty much a blur.

I remember the doctor telling me that I was leaking amniotic fluid and that they were going to monitor me for the next 24 hours. I was so scared. I was 31 weeks pregnant. They gave me something to calm me down. They did another ultrasound and the baby was breech. My doctor ordered a Cat scan to check the size of my pelvis to see if I would be able to deliver my baby vaginally. They found out that if I did go into labor I would not have to have a Cesarean section.

After 24 hours, they put me on a different floor and told me I would have to stay in the hospital until I delivered, but I was not in labor. Things seemed to go OK and as long as I was not in labor I felt much better. I had been in my new room for three hours and my water broke. Everything else happened so fast. My contractions started immediately. In a few hours I was pushing and my son was born into the world bottom first! He weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces. He was breathing on his own and I was able to hold him right away. He was then taken to the NICU.

I remember seeing him in his incubator soon after he was born. His feet were around his face because of the way he was lying in the womb. It took a few days before they settled down to normal. He was beautiful. He only had one setback when he was in NICU. He had some stomach issues that were causing him trouble, but with the power of prayer they soon disappeared. He is truly a miracle. He was able to come home five weeks later!

He is now 7 years old and very happy and healthy. He has had no long-term effects and just started the 2nd grade! He has a sister that was born 364 days later at 37 weeks, a brother three years later born at 38 weeks and will have another sister born in eight more weeks! We are so blessed, and every time we look at Adam we see how important prayer is!
