For 12 long years we had been waiting for Shannen Werly to be born (weighing 7.6 pounds and 20 inches long). Indeed, it was a great miracle that she did hold on to me considering I was on a high-risk pregnancy. I was pregnant at 37 and my blood sugar was monitored every two months as I might have developed gestational diabetes because my mother had it.
My husband and I opted for a scheduled Cesarean delivery just to make sure everything would be fine for me and the baby despite the high cost it would give us. We chose October 10 (Friday) for the date. I was in my 38th week and second day of gestation.
I was told by my OB/GYN to have a light breakfast before 7 a.m. and be at the hospital at 10 a.m.
While in the labor room, I was injected with an IV first at about 12 p.m. Then I was sedated. When I was wheeled in to the delivery room, I could hardly open my eyes. I could only hear the voice of my doctor telling me what they were doing to me. Then I felt some pain when they injected me in my spine. After two more injections, everything is a black out.
I didn't see my baby come out, but I heard her cry. That was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in my entire life.
After a few more hours, I was brought in the recovery room for observation, and finally to my private room. I was still dizzy and in pain when I saw my husband. I wanted to see our baby girl, but he said she would be roomed in with us the next day.
I was crying of pain during the night even with pain relievers injected through my IV. But when I saw our baby the next morning, it was all worth it. I suddenly felt strong and managed to stand up just to hold her and kiss her. I tried to bear with the pain so I could just be with my baby and breastfeed her.
I was discharged on Monday after I had my bowel movement the night before. So for those pregnant women thinking that a Cesarean section is a much more painful process than vaginal delivery, well, all I can say is, it's not important how much pain you have to undergo as long as you are comfortable with what you think is best for you and the baby. And now that we have our little darling, nothing else matters to me. No regrets!
