My Beautiful Granddaughter

It's been almost 48 hours since my precious granddaughter was stillborn.

Amaliah was due on February 16, 2009. After a couple of false alarms my daughter went into labor on Friday, the 20th of February. We went to the hospital around 12:45 p.m. We were told after everything was checked it was too early, as my daughter had only dilated 1 centimeter. Baby's heartbeat was strong.

We went back to the hospital at 6:20 p.m. The only fear in my mind was that we might be sent home again. I never in my wildest dreams thought this would happen.

The midwife couldn't find Baby's heartbeat on the monitor. She called for another midwife to help. She couldn't find a heartbeat either (I knew by this stage this would be the worst day of our lives).

They called a doctor, who came with a portable scan and he declared there was no heartbeat. How can this have happened? What went wrong in those four hours of being sent home and arriving back at the hospital? Why didn't I tell the hospital no, we are staying! We should never have gone home!

My daughter delivered Amaliah at 1:09 p.m. on Saturday, February 21. It took everything my daughter had to push Amaliah out. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

We got to spend some time with Amaliah, who was perfect and the most beautiful newborn I have ever seen.

We are now waiting for an autopsy report to see if we can find out why this happened? We have so many unanswered questions. As I write this my daughter has rung to say she has found the perfect little casket for Amaliah – and it just breaks my heart.
